Delegator Hopes For Good Ground In July Cup

With the much anticipated Group 1 July Cup taking place at Newmarket Racecourse this Saturday July 10, 2011, the hype continues to surround race favourite Delegator.

Delegator, who is currently offering odds of 3-1, is looking to continue his winning run that saw his claim victory at York last start.

The five-year-old’s trainers are desperately hoping that the rain will cease, with Delegator well known for his dry track ability.

Racing Manager Simon Crisford said that Delegator’s connections would be anxiously monitoring the sky ahead of Saturday’s race.

“The ground as it is would be fine for him but we don’t want any further rain for him,” he said.

According to Newmarket’s clerk of the course, Michael Prosser, the ground held up well after the first day of the three-day July Festival.

“The track has held up well and by the last race it was lovely weather and the grass was dry again and the time of 58.99 seconds says it is good ground,” Mr Prosser said.

“We had 5.5mm of rain during the day when the forecast predicted a 70 per cent chance of rain and that percentage is forecast to decrease for Friday and Saturday.

“It’s described as 50/50 for Friday with predictions of 2-4mm if the showers arrive. Saturday is predicted at even less with the rain forecast for middle to later in the day.

“The breeze we had today from the south-west is expected to remain on Friday but drop away for Saturday.”

York Racecourse will also begin its two-day carnival today, where the track is also expected to be rated good.

“We are giving it as good ground,” York’s clerk of the course William Derby said yesterday.

“We’ve had a few showers today totalling less than a millimetre and making it 7mm of rain in the last 48 hours.

“We are forecast showers in the next 24 hours for anything up to three to four millimetres.

“If we get that it would keep the going as good but if we missed the showers it would go good, good to firm in places.”
